moyo in a bucket : the last kiss series

I was sitting in front of my laptop, per usual. I realized I hadn't unpacked my flight luggage two days ago. Yes, I was quite not in the mood and even now, I still have that suitcase open and slid it under my bed. I just needed my toiletries, my skincare, and my makeup. So I took them and left that suitcase open, and I put everything on my cabinet where I store everything. I saw that my makeup container seemed a little crowded, so I finally decluttered everything I saw. Found two lipsticks I bought for my yearbook 'photoshoot' a few years back- I believe from 2021. It was from Emina on their series Sugar Rush, in the shade of Carrot Cake and Berry Shake. I ended up not using them, because the formula is not actually my preference. Also, the colors seemed a little bit too warm and not suitable for me. I did use the Carrot Cake one as a blush one year ago I guess, when I finally stopped using it. It has a sheer highlight to it and a color that mimics a sun-kissed look. But I didn't do my makeup like that anymore. And also because it's probably already expired anyway... There's also one lip crayon I bought probably two years ago, it was from Implora in the shade First Kiss. I use it quite often, but I don't like the color and texture anymore, so she's gonna be gone soon too. I ended up adding one more to get rid of, which is a lip tint I frequently purchase. It's Hanasui's lip stain in the shade Rosy. I discarded it because I already bought the new one, and this one's started to run out too, couldn't reach the product.

I saw many videos where people depotting their makeup from the original container to the collective container, so they could have many products in the same container. It's fun to watch and I couldn't help the urge to do so to my old makeup, not to use it for the future, but to destroy it. I have this small cream container and a palette knife for mixing paint. It was so satisfying and yeah, I just scraped and put them all, but the lip tint in that small container.

And that occurred to me that I could possibly make a painting out of it, and so I did.

(From top to bottom) Rosy, Berry Shake, Carrot Cake, First Kiss

I took a sketchbook and swatched every color and checked if I could find something on my camera roll to turn into a lipstick painting.

I found this cute photo of my pet Moyo inside a green bucket. My father sent a video of her one night, I rushed to the kitchen to see her and took this quick capture. I actually feel tempted to try painting something new, and I haven't done anything like this before. Either the object or the medium. It was interesting. I felt lost at first when sketching, because in this picture Moyo seemed to be stretched due to the camera angle. And I actually needed to use a fisheye perspective or use circle sketching (which I practiced but am not really good at currently). I tackled it with simple sketching and didn't actually use the fisheye technique.

Before coloring it, I edited the picture first with a color-washed filter. In this piece, I used reddish colors because of my pigment range. I did this to make it easier to do some sort of color-mixing and color gradient to create depth and a realistic result. I colored it using every color possible. There are 4 products that I used, and both the Emina gave a warm tone when applied to a paper (as expected). Interestingly, the Implora one gave a pinkish hue that's quite vibrant and saturated. I was in shock because I only checked for one full stroke on a paper and not actually using it for painting (which usually use a smaller amount of product). As a solvent, I was thinking of using micellar water, since I was gonna use a makeup product. It turned out that it could only work for water-based products like the lip tint. The lipsticks have a granular or grainy finish when mixed with micellar water. Also, the pigment didn't really project so well. In the future, I was considering using balm or ointment type as a solvent, or maybe try to use an oil painting solvent I have.

I needed some more pigment to make it more alive. I sharpened my pencil and used the graphite granules to darken and deepen the pigments I already have, and I continue working on that, especially for the eyes and some parts of the bucket and fur. I tried to portray the same highlight in Moyo's eyes from the real reference to make it as real as possible. Also, the whiskers were added as a cherry on top. I was using a palette knife and took a small amount of white modelling paste and scraped it slowly to create the whiskers, enough to make it visible but still appear slightly faded to the background.

There's a subtle reflection from the glitter coming from one of the lipsticks that's visible from different points of view. I don't really know how this piece turned out, but I am quite satisfied with the attempt I made. I could say it was such a fresh idea to begin with, and I was pretty happy doing it! Since I have so many remaining products in that container, I would continue this as my first project posted in Creations. I think 3-5 pieces would do just great!
